Statement of the Chinese Embassy’s Spokesman on the Case of Zhao Wei (2002-10-25)
2003/10/24

The Embassy of the People?s Republic of China has received the report from the Chinese Consulate General in Vancouver on the disappearance and death of Miss Zhao Wei.  We were shocked and distressed at the tragic mishap Miss Zhao met with.  This case of vicious crime has inflicted great pains on the family of the victim.  We hereby express our profound sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of Miss Zhao.
Since the beginning of this year, there have been four homicide cases involving Chinese nationals residing in Canada.  The Chinese Embassy has expressed its concern to the departments concerned in the Canadian Government through appropriate channels, calling on the Canadian Government to attach great importance to these grave developments, and take specific measures to prevent the recurrence of the vicious crimes of the kind.  The Canadian side should act promptly to solve the cases and bring the murderers to justice. At the same time, we requested the relevant departments of the Canadian government to expeditiously report, in accordance with international practices, to the Chinese Embassy and the Chinese Consulates General concerned all the  cases involving the personal safety of Chinese nationals residing in Canada.
The Chinese Embassy wishes to take this opportunity to caution once again the Chinese nationals residing in Canada, and the Chinese students studying in Canada in particular, that they should heighten their sense of security, so as to prevent from happening to them any vicious accidents that may lead to injuries or even deaths. In cases of emergency, they should immediately seek help from the police, and report to the Chinese Embassy or the nearest Chinese Consulate General.
