On November 29, 2021, Chinese Ambassador to Canada Cong Peiwu gave an interview to the National Post, a Canadian mainstream media, mainly expounding China’s position on the Taiwan question.

Ambassador Cong said, the true status quo of the Taiwan question and what lies at the heart of one China is: there is but one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China, and the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing China. The UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 has made it clear that "the representatives of the Government of the People's Republic of China are the only lawful representatives of China to the UN". The Office of Legal Affairs of the UN Secretariat, in a number of legal opinions following the resolution, has also confirmed that "the United Nations considers 'Taiwan' as a province of China with no separate status". We will strive for the prospect of peaceful reunification with the utmost sincerity and efforts. That said, should the separatist forces for Taiwan independence make provocations, force our hands or even cross the red line, we will be compelled to take resolute measures. On this question of China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, there is no room for China to back down.

Ambassador Cong noted, the Taiwan authorities recalcitrantly stick to the “Taiwan independence” separatist position, refuse to recognize the 1992 consensus in an attempt to solicit foreign support, rely on the US to seek independence and resist reunification. The US sent seriously wrong signals to the “Taiwan independence” forces.

Ambassador Cong emphasized, the one-China principle is a consensus of the international community and a universally recognized norm governing international relations, which does not allow distortion or challenge. The one-China principle is recognized and supported by 180 countries in the world. The more unequivocal the opposition against "Taiwan independence" is, and the more resolute the actions against "Taiwan independence" are, the more hopeful that peaceful reunification will be achieved, the more possible that the Taiwan Strait will be  peaceful and stable.

Ambassador Cong also answered questions about the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games, and elaborated on positions such as the opposition to politicizing sports.

The National Post carried the main content of the interview on November 30.
