Statement by the Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy On Disturbances Caused by Some Foreign Nationals on the Tiananmen Square during the Spring Festival Holidays (2002-02-14)
2003/10/27

Around the time of the traditional Chinese Spring Festival, dozens of foreign nationals went to the Tiananmen Square in Beijing to stir up disturbances by chanting slogans of the cult Falun Gong and staging illegal rallying. Their behaviors have violated Law on Demonstration of the People?s Republic of China and relevant laws banning cult organizations and their activities. These foreign nationals were led away in accordance with the law, and received admonishment and education from authorities in charge and were treated humanely.

As it is known to all, Falun Gong is an evil cult whose nature is anti-society and anti-humanity, and is outlawed by the Chinese government. These foreign nationals went to China to stage cult activities at the time of the Chinese Spring Festival. This is obviously an organized and premeditated activity aimed at disturbing the social order and stability, and souring the festive atmosphere. What they have done has aroused the indignity and strong dissatisfaction of the Chinese people.

The Chinese side strongly demands the relevant foreign governments educate their citizens visiting China to abide by the laws and regulations of China, and to refrain from taking part in any illegal activities.
