Truth about the So-called "Sujiatun Concentration Camp"
2006/04/18
Press Release

Recently, Falun Gong has been making a big fuss about the so-called "Sujiatun Concentration Camp" incident, to the effect that more than 6,000 Falun Gong practitioners were imprisoned at a "concentration camp" in Sujiatun, a district in Shenyang, capital city of Liaoning province in northeast China. They have gone so far as to claim that many of the above-mentioned practitioners were cremated after their organs had been harvested. They later modified the story by saying that the "concentration camp" was established in a small hospital called the Sujiatun Hospital on Thrombus Diseases.

In order to lay bare the sensational story and set the record straight, Mr. Zheng Bin, vice director of the district government of Sujiatun and Ms. Zhang Yuqin, Vice President of the Sujiatun Hospital on Thrombus Diseases hosted a press conference on April 12, 2006, to give their first-hand accounts and shed light on the real truth of the accusation.

According to Mr. Zheng Bin, Sujiatun, a district with a population of 430,000 and located some 15 kilometers away from the center of Shenyang, is a state-designated agricultural pilot area, known for both its agricultural and industrial achievements. The lies concocted by Falun Gong followers have greatly denigrated the image of Sujiatun. The people there are really outraged about this. Ms. Zheng Yuqin said that domestic and foreign journalists are most welcomed to visit her hospital to see for themselves what on earth is really happening there.

Ms. Zhang was quoted as saying that she has been wondering why Falun Gong targeted at her hospital, adding that maybe it's because the hospital was quite famous. The Sujiatun Hospital on Thrombus Diseases has been well reputed in treating thrombus diseases by combining western pharmacy and traditional Chinese herbal medicine. Each year, it receives nearly 300,000 patients in total from 21 provinces and municipalities across the country, as well as from foreign countries including the Republic of Korea, the United States, Russia, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Ms. Zhang said that the hospital, with only 300 beds, does not have enough space to accommodate 6,000 Falun Gong followers at all, nor the "basement" or "cremator" claimed by Falun Gong. A picture of the so-called "crematorium" in Sujiatun widely used on Falun Gong's websites is actually a photo of the back of the hospital's boiler house, shot from outside the hospital compound. Showing a picture of the front of the boiler house, she said the window-paned boiler house, taking up an area of 180 square meters, is open to the public and as it is located in front of the residential garden, everybody can see it. "How could that boiler be a cremation furnace?" she was puzzled, adding that the boiler is only used to provide winter heat, disinfect medical equipments, and cook food for patients and their families. She also said the hospital, as a specialized thrombus institute, has no equipment or qualifications whatsoever to conduct transplant surgeries. "Anyone even with a minimal medical knowledge knows that a cerebrovascular doctor cannot conduct cornea transplant surgery as Falun Gong alleged," Zhang noted.

She said that the hospital stuff and residents of Sujiatun at large had received lots of phone calls from overseas since March 18, some ringing up even at midnight to make inquiries or sheerly to disturb. This has greatly disrupted the normal lives of people there. On March 31, all the hospital staff issued a statement to refute the rumor on its Website, www.thrombusres-cn.net. Ms.Zhang claimed the hospital will reserve the rights to affix the legal responsibility for the slanderous behavior of Falun Gong and its media.

According to the latest information, some foreign media including Japan's NHK and the Consul-General of the Unites States in Shenyang have already made trips to the above-mentioned hospital. They all testified later that there was no such a thing as "concentration camp" in Sujiatun and the "crematorium" claimed by Falun Gong was nothing but a boiler house.
